Every so often there’s an occasion that makes me wish I was still a full-time critic. Still out there, actively reviewing Canada‘s musicians. Last night was one of those occasions.
A friend, Tom R Mrnka, invited me to attend a small intimate concert in his backyard, known fondly as the musical garden.
I was very familiar with Barney Bentall, having previously covered him on gigs and cd’s. His son Dustin, however, was an unknown entity. My curiosity was definitely aroused.
Last night I attended a special stop on The Bentall’s ‘Evacuation Tour’, and it was pure magic. The incredible connection between Dustin and wife Trixie Berkel was truly captivating, the harmonics a delicious blend that one doesn’t hear too often without the aid of Auto-Tune. This duo will never need it!
Trixie utilized banjo, guitar, accordion, while Dustin used guitar and harmonica. Their steel guitarist was Bob Blair from Gabriola Island, I believe.
The music was original pieces with the odd cover. The originals caught my full attention, firing imagination and giving me a new direction for personal listening.
‘Satin Pillow’ gave me chills and heartache. For me it was the most memorable original, but I loved them all, from Stones in the Field to Queen of Diamonds and others.
The cover of ‘Hasn’t Hit Me Yet’ by Blue Rodeo was greatly appreciated by the audience. The very significant line - “Down in the middle of Lake Ontario” was met with catcalls, applause and had many on their feet.
A Canadian classic, sung by Canadian artists… can’t beat it!!!

You sadly will not find them living in the world of social media, and that’s great! More time for their family of four and for their music!
